01
Initial inquiry
The process begins with the initial contact, where you will share details about the type of interpreting (simultaneous, consecutive, or liaison) and the languages involved. You will describe the subject matter, speakers, audience, type, date, time, duration and location of the event.
02
Assessment and cost estimation
In this step, I will assess your request to provide a cost (based on my established rate) estimate within 24 hours.
03
Confirmation and Onboarding
Once you accept the estimate, we will move forward with the onboarding step. This might involve signing a freelance contract which should outline the agreed-upon rate, interpretation style, payment terms, cancellation policy, and any logistical arrangements. If you haven't already secured a second interpreter, I'm happy to recommend a qualified colleague to complete the team.
04
Preparation
As most interpreting projects require two interpreters for optimal performance, my booth partner and I will request relevant materials (like presentations and documents) beforehand to prepare for the specific subject matter and terminology used in your event.
05
Day of the event
I will arrive at the location or connect to the platform (RSI) at the designated time. If it's simultaneous interpretation, a technician might be there setting up the equipment. We'll do a quick sound check to ensure everything is functioning smoothly.
My booth partner and I will collaborate on a brief pre-event discussion to clarify any last-minute details or specific terminology. This helps us provide the most accurate and nuanced interpretation possible.
As the event commences, for simultaneous interpretation, I translate the speaker's words into the target language with precision and immediacy. My partner remains attentive, prepared to seamlessly take over if needed. For consecutive interpretation, we work in tandem. I listen intently, taking detailed notes to capture the essence of the speaker's message and then translate. By the event's conclusion, my primary objective is to have facilitated clear and comprehensive communication for all parties involved.

FAQ
Why You Need a Professional Interpreter
Here are some of the most common questions I get about my interpretation services
How much do you charge?
The price will depend. After establishing the details during a free email, phone or Zoom consultation, I will prepare a detailed, non-binding quote for you at no charge. Deadlines will always be agreed with you in advance.
Isn't interpreting just speaking another language? Why can't I use a bilingual person or AI?
Interpreting goes beyond basic translation. It requires real-time comprehension of the speaker's message, including subtleties and cultural nuances. Then, we convey this meaning accurately to the listener in their own language, ensuring clear comprehension. But as an interpreter my role goes beyond this. I am a facilitator of deep understanding and a weaver of connections. It's a responsibility that requires me to be fully present, actively engaged, and undeniably human.
Can't we just use English in the meeting?
While English is a common business language, not everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves fully in a non-native language. This can lead to missed opportunities, misunderstandings, and ultimately, a less productive meeting. As a professional interpreter, I ensure clear and confident communication for all parties involved.
Why do I need two interpreters?
Simultaneous interpreting is mentally demanding, so we often work in pairs. In this way we can combat fatigue and ensure top-notch delivery throughout the event. Collaboration also improves accuracy and workflow, with a safety net for unforeseen situations. Two interpreters mean a smoother experience for all.
Do interpreters need to prepare for events?
As a skilled interpreter, I invest time beforehand to research the subject matter of your event (e.g., illustration, human rights, railways) and build relevant vocabulary. This allows me to act as a "cross-cultural alter ego" for the speaker, ensuring accurate and culturally sensitive communication.
Why are interpreters important for international events?
Our work is crucial for successful communication in meetings, conferences, or negotiations with international participants. We bridge language barriers, allowing for clear understanding of the message, even the unspoken aspects, as Peter Drucker famously said, "The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said".
What is the difference between translation and interpretation?
Translation and interpretation, while both crucial for cross-cultural communication, differ in their approach. Translation focuses on written communication, meticulously converting text from one language to another while considering cultural nuances, like writing a well-phrased letter for someone who doesn't share your language. Interpretation tackles spoken communication in real-time. Here, the interpreter acts like a bridge between languages, instantly grasping the speaker's message and cultural context, then conveying it accurately to the listener. So, while both involve cultural understanding, interpretation adds the pressure of immediacy and on-the-spot comprehension.
